🦖 Direwolf — The Dire Wolf
The Direwolf is not just another predator — it is a fierce pack-hunting predator of the Ice Age that will become a formidable addition to any collection. In ARK, it is presented as a fast and ruthless mount that does not require a saddle, making it unique for both early and late game.
The Direwolf is a fast, aggressive pack predator that fills the niche between the Raptor and the Sabertooth, but with a unique advantage — no saddle required.
Unique Mechanics:
🐺 Pack Boost — the core feature. When in a pack of 3–5 individuals, the highest-level wolf becomes the Alpha, emitting a red-yellow aura. The Alpha gains +50% damage and damage resistance. If the Alpha dies or separates, another wolf takes its place.
🚫 No Saddle Required — this makes the Direwolf ideal for early exploration and caves, as you don’t risk losing an expensive saddle along with your pet.
🏃 Fast Movement — one of the fastest medium-sized land predators, capable of high jumps.
🎒 Weight Reduction for Hides and Pelt — hides and pelt weigh 85% less, making it an excellent transport for these resources.
💰 Efficient Gatherer — gathers hides, pelt, meat, and chitin well, and has a 10x bonus to silk gathering when attacking webs.
Taming:
- Knockout with Tranquilizers or Darts
- Preferred food: Superior Kibble, then Raw Mutton or Raw Prime Meat
- ⚠️ Critical Tip: Direwolves are susceptible to Bola — use this to immobilize one individual and pull it away from the pack for safe taming
- Trap Tactic: Build a wooden trap (they cannot break wood) with double doorframes. Lure the entire pack inside — you can tame them all at once
- Alternative: Use an Argentavis to grab the chosen wolf and move it to a safe location (PvP)

- The Island — Snow biome (primary habitat), also found in caves
- Scorched Earth — spawns alone in the desert (due to the lack of pack bonus, they are less dangerous)
