🦖 Deinosuchus — The Bloody Giant
The Deinosuchus is one of the largest crocodiles to ever exist on Earth and a formidable addition to any collection. In ARK, it is presented as a powerful amphibious predator capable of crushing bone and dominating both in water and on land.
Unique Mechanics:
🩸 Giga Bite — the core feature. When holding the right mouse button, the Deinosuchus opens its jaws and charges a bite. At full charge, damage can reach 425 and applies a unique bleed: the target loses stamina and takes periodic damage only while moving. This makes escaping from a Deinosuchus practically impossible.
🦶 Tail Swipe — deals 70 damage and knocks back the target. Works only on land, but is effective for crowd control.
🛡️ Damage Reduction — the Deinosuchus takes 65% less damage from arrows, 30% less from firearms, and 50% less from any source when hit in the head. This makes it incredibly durable.
🏊 Two Swimming Modes — it can swim on the surface (like a raft) or dive freely (like an aquatic creature).
Taming:
The Deinosuchus is a passive tame, but with a unique mechanic:
- Wait for it to come ashore and open its jaws to sunbathe (this lasts about 15 seconds)
- Approach from the front and place food directly into its open jaws (E key)
- If the jaws close or you approach from the side — it will attack
- Repeat the cycle until taming is complete
- Preferred food: Superior Kibble, then Raw Mutton
Recommended tactic: use a Ghillie suit for stealth and a trap (stone dinosaur gateway + walls) to secure the process.
Spawn Locations:
- The Island — rivers, swamps, shallows
- The Center — only in the northeast of the map (shallows)
- Scorched Earth — can spawn
- Extinction — can spawn (according to player reports)
- Aberration — does not spawn
📖 Why It Deserves a Place in the Collection
The Deinosuchus represents a unique hybrid archetype — a predator that is simultaneously a deadly fighter and an efficient resource gatherer. Its Giga Bite with a unique bleed makes it a killer of bosses and alpha creatures, while its versatility in gathering resources (from berries to metal) turns it into an indispensable assistant for any tribe. For collectors, it is a creature that combines real paleontological significance (one of the largest crocodiles in history) with ARK’s unique game design — from complex passive taming to a dual role in the economy.
